The Cybersecurity ‘Market For Lemons’: Why Good Companies Buy Bad Products (And How to Fix it)
It is hard to tell a good cybersecurity solution from a bad one in today’s market. This leads to well-meaning companies making poor security decisions. Using George Akerlof’s findings from his seminal 1970 paper on the negative effects of information asymmetry, this presentation will explore how the current cybersecurity landscape punishes quality, promotes adverse selection practices, and breeds a ‘race to the bottom’ mentality. In other words, we will discuss how the cybersecurity market is a “market for lemons”. We will then discuss ways we can work to fix this problem and how companies can make smarter cybersecurity investments.
